What are the basic differences between the types of fence we sell the most of?

  • Steel fencing closely resembles wrought iron fencing and are ornamental by design. Steel fencing usually last forever, very hard to bend/break, and provide the ultimate security vs. aluminum, chain link, or vinyl/PVC fencing.
  • Aluminum fencing are also ornamental by design. The advantages of aluminum is it is usually cheaper, lighter, and easier to install.
  • Vinyl (PVC) fences are a relatively new to the fencing industry but is the hottest seller since 2004. Vinyl fencing comes in many of the same styles as wood fence. This advantages of vinyl fencing is it’s easy to maintain, lightweight, does not require painting, and there are many styles to choose from.

What do I need to tell a contractor who is going to build a fence for me?

Once you have decided to install a fence, you should be prepared to discuss the following points with your fence installation contractor:

  1. The primary purpose of the fence – privacy, security, safety , etc.
  2. The exact location of the fence including spray painting the ground where you envision the corners and gate openings to be
  3. What type of design features you want (height, style, material)
  4. What you are willing to spend on the project (ask where you could cut corners)
  5. Desired completion date

What kind of fence will keep my pets confined but will not block my view?

Traditionally, a chain link fence will do the trick but chain link fencing does not provide the beauty when compared to steel or aluminum fencing. As long as your pet is a decent size, many of the steel and aluminum fencing will keep them confined to the backyard.

How deep do fence posts have to be set into the ground?

Standard is at least 24” however, this depends on many factors, including the type of material used and the climate conditions in your area (prairie land (cracks when dry), snow/ice grounds, high wind areas, etc.). How do I select a good fence contractor?
